St. John’s Two-Year-Old Class was started in September, 1994, as an introduction to preschool for two-year-olds who attend class with one parent or guardian. The class meets once a week for an hour-and-a-half. The first semester runs from September through December. At this time, both the student and an adult attend together. The second semester runs from January through May, at which time the students attend class by themselves. Class size is limited to ten students, each with one parent or guardian.
Through various positive learning experiences, the Two-Year-Old class program prepares the child for future classes when they will be “on their own”.
Socialization is an important goal of the class, which includes free-play time at the beginning of each class, as well as time spent on the playground sharing the equipment and in various activities in the gym. Both fine motor skills, such as finger plays, dot gluing on various craft projects, and gross motor skills, such as running, jumping, kicking and throwing balls, are developed throughout the class time. Classroom activities include songs, stories, finger plays, games and crafts. All of these activities include an emphasis on numbers, colors, letters, and shapes.
